June 25th, 2009Practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in this In the first activity, the Trash Zapper, the user has to solve math facts problems to earn tractor beams with which to try and zap space-borne recyclables. When 15 pieces have been collected, the user moves on to the Number Recycler activity. Here, the challenge is to create correct equations while recycling unneeded equation variables for later use. From the Recycler, the user moves on to the Cave Runner activity. This activity requires the most mental gymnastics. Here, our hero has a number on his back. To jet his way to the higher levels inside the cave where Spot has been taken, the user must mentally calculate the values of math operations on opposite sides of multiple openings, and choose the opening whose values bracket his own number. Got that? And to make it a bit more challenging, the hero’s number changes as he bumps into descending water drops which carry mathematical ‘charges.’ This one will make your sixth grader work! Finally, our hero encounters the evil Trash Alien in his space ship, and has to confront not only math problems, but floating space trash obstacles.

June 25th, 2009Game play begins with four Muncher lives (the one currently in play, plus three others in reserve). After scoring a certain number of points, the player gains an extra life. Players lose a life if they swallow an incorrect answer. Additionally, five different types of enemy (or “Troggle”) appear throughout the game. Players lose a life if they make contact with a Troggle. There are five modes of play: Multiples, Factors, Primes, Equality, and Inequality. Players can also choose from a “challenge” mode, which randomizes these modes. In the Multiples mode, the muncher must munch all numbers which are multiples of the number given; for example, if the designated number is 3 then the muncher must eat all 6′s, 9′s, and 12′s and avoid numbers such as 7. In Factors the muncher seeks to ingest the factors of a given number, in Primes he craves prime numbers, and in the Equality and Inequality modes the muncher devours expressions such as 2+4 which are equivalent or not equivalent (respectively) to the designated number.
